At a solemn Chrism Mass in Monrovia, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Monrovia delivered a powerful and emotional message to priests, urging them to renew their spiritual commitment, deepen their faith, and abandon practices that foster division within the Church.

Speaking Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Monrovia before a gathering of clergy, religious, and lay faithful, the Most Reverend Dr. Gabriel Blamo Snosio Jubwe emphasized that the priesthood is a sacred calling, not a profession, and warned against actions that weaken unity among priests and the wider Church community.

He challenged priests to remain faithful to their anointing, reminding them that their role is rooted in service, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to Christ.  “You are priests forever. Don’t lose heart despite challenges, fatigue, or discouragement,” said.

The Archbishop’s remarks took a firm tone against seeking spiritual solutions outside the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church.  He noted that some priests and faithful are increasingly drawn to alternative practices that undermine the Church’s unity and identity.

The head of the Catholic Church in Monrovia said, “Do not run elsewhere; true grace and spiritual strength come through the sacraments entrusted to the Church.” He called on priests to recommit themselves to authentic Catholic teachings and practices that build faith rather than divide it.

The Chrism Mass, according to the Archbishop, is a significant event in the Church’s calendar, serving as a moment of renewal, during which priests reaffirm their vows and sacred oils are blessed for use in sacraments throughout the year.

Amid the solemnity, the Archbishop reflected on the recent loss of two priests, describing their deaths as a painful reminder of the sacrifices inherent in priestly life. He encouraged the clergy to honor their legacy through deeper fidelity and renewed dedication to their mission.

He praised priests for their resilience, acknowledging the difficulties they face in ministering to communities amid economic and social challenges in Liberia. Despite these hardships, he commended their continued service in parishes, hospitals, and communities across the country. The Archbishop concluded with a call for unity, urging both clergy and laity to work together in strengthening the Church. He reminded the faithful that the mission of the Church is shared, and that prayer, collaboration, and commitment are essential to sustaining its work.

The message, delivered at one of the Church’s most important liturgical gatherings, is expected to resonate strongly among Liberia’s Catholic community as it navigates both internal and external challenges.
