President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has returned to Liberia following a high-level diplomatic visit to the United States, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to self-reliance and renewed international partnerships. Speaking to reporters at the Roberts International Airport (RIA) on Saturday, President Boakai described the visit as “a very positive move,” aligned with his Liberia First agenda—a philosophy that prioritizes national interest in all policy and engagement efforts.
“Everything we’re doing is centered around putting Liberia first,” he said. “That’s what guides our efforts—ensuring that our country’s interests are prioritized.” While in the U.S., the President held talks with leaders and representatives from more than 15 countries, focusing on investment, technology transfer, and sustainable development. He acknowledged Liberia’s current limitations but expressed confidence in the country’s potential.
“We are not yet among Africa’s top three investment destinations,” Boakai admitted. “But we are working toward that, by building confidence in ourselves, in our systems, and in our leadership.” Citing both the U.S. and China as developmental models, President Boakai emphasized that Liberia must forge its own unique path forward.
“We don’t have the technology yet, and we can’t always rely on partners. Our focus must be on building a self-sufficient Liberia—one that no longer depends entirely on outside help,” he stated. The President reiterated his role as the country’s chief diplomat and global ambassador, saying, “My role is to sell Liberia in a positive way—to tell our story and show the rest of the world who we are. We must be bold. We must aim for greatness.”
