In response to recent media reports suggesting that the construction of the Grand Bassa University Bridge has been abandoned, the Ministry of Public Works has clarified the project’s status.
A press release dated May 26, 2025, states that contrary to claims that the contractor had halted work with no effort to resume construction, significant progress has been made. The release mentions that the contractor completed the construction of both bridge abutments, which provide foundational support for the bridge.
Currently, the contractor is backfilling the abutments with rocks. The Ministry highlighted that this essential process is being carried out to reinforce the structures and protect them from environmental factors over time.
Furthermore, the elevation of both abutments by three feet was a deliberate engineering decision based on hydrologic assessments of the water table during the peak of the rainy season. This adjustment ensures long-term structural resilience and flood resistance. The next phase of the project involves the installation of the Bailey bridge components. According to the release, these parts are currently being finalized by the manufacturer and are scheduled for delivery and installation no later than August of this year.
To align with the increased height of the abutments, the contractor will also raise the approach road, ensuring a smooth and accessible passage once the bridge is completed.
The Ministry assures the public and stakeholders that the project remains active and on track. All efforts are being made to meet the timeline and quality expectations. “We appreciate your continued patience and support, which are largely influenced by your sense of urgency to see the successful completion of this much-anticipated project,” the release concluded.
