The Honorable House of Representatives has rescheduled its concession compliance public hearing with ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) to July 1, 2025, and is requesting a detailed financial report covering the company’s last five years of operations in the country.
In a letter addressed to Mr. Michiel Van Der Merwe, Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Liberia by the Chief Clerk, the hearing will now be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, in the 1st Floor Conference Room of the Capitol Building.
The hearing will be conducted by the Joint Committee on Investment and Concessions, comprising members of the Committees on Lands, Mines, Energy, Natural Resources, Environment, and Labor. The review will center on AML’s adherence to its Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) with the Government of Liberia, with a specific focus on the government’s 30% share in the concession.
The company is required to present a “comprehensive financial gain report” detailing its operational and financial performance over the last five years Additionally, AML has been asked to submit all relevant documentation before or on the day of the hearing to support the compliance review process.
Let it be known that the House wants to be categorically cleared that this hearing comes at a time of heightened legislative scrutiny of concession agreements, with lawmakers and the public increasingly focused on transparency, benefit-sharing, and accountability in the extractive sector. The Civil Society, Media and the public are encouraged to witness and participate in the public hearing as the House is committed to ensuring that the wellbeing of the people is first.
