The Government of Liberia has, for the first time, addressed the widely publicized US$10 million construction project in Foya, Lofa County. Earlier reports suggested that the project was meant to serve as a presidential villa for President Joseph Nyuma Boakai. However, the Government has clarified that the structure is not the President’s personal residence, but instead will serve as the Mano River Union Presidential Center for Regional Peace and Development.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah explained that this regional initiative aims to promote peace in the Mano River region, which includes Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and the Ivory Coast. According to Piah, the project represents a strategic investment in regional peace and security, with an estimated value of $6.1 million. This funding involves contributions from the three countries and support from international partners.
Piah dismissed previous claims from the opposition that President Boakai was building an extravagant personal home. He noted that Lofa County was chosen for its crucial role in fostering peace among neighboring countries. The Information Minister stated that the government intends to leverage its unique position to encourage greater cooperation and peace-building efforts across borders. He announced that President Boakai would visit the project site this Christmas, ahead of its official launch in 2026.
