Maryland County District #2 Representative Anthony F. Williams was removed from a session on Thursday, October 30, 2025, following a heated exchange with House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon and Deputy Speaker Thomas P. Fallah. Rep. Williams accused the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of allegedly protecting homosexuals within the Legislature. He stated that whenever homosexuality is on the House agenda, the presiding Speaker appears uncomfortable discussing it, raising concerns among the Liberian public. “Liberia is a Christian state. We will not support any homosexual bill in this country,” Rep. Williams declared. He added, “As legislators, we should openly discuss this matter and reject it. There are more pressing issues affecting the Liberian people that require our attention.”
These comments from Rep. Williams followed the recent submission of a bill by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to the Legislature, aimed at banning harmful traditional and cultural practices in Liberia. According to Rep. Williams, that bill has already been accepted by the House and is currently undergoing committee review.
Rep. Williams further alleged that homosexuality is already being practiced in Liberia, pointing fingers at some institutions, including the United Methodist Church. He urged his colleagues to openly debate the issue and take a firm stance against it. “We must tell the world that Liberia will not endorse any pro-homosexual agenda. Anyone found supporting such actions should face prosecution and be sentenced to life imprisonment,” he stated.
Outside the chambers, Rep. Williams described the House of Representatives as a political theater where lawmakers are expected to exchange ideas and represent their constituents through open debates. He expressed concern that “some of our colleagues lack the courage to discuss national issues. They prefer to remain silent and vote on committee reports. However, we will always stand to correct the wrongs during our regular sessions.”
