In an effort to strengthen road maintenance and community monitoring in Liberia, the National Road Fund (NRF) has officially turned over a fleet of 28 motorbikes, a pickup truck, along with computer and printing equipment to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The donation is intended to support the rollout of the Community-Based Organization (CBO) Road Monitoring Program, which seeks to ensure timely reporting and quick response to maintenance issues on community and feeder roads across the county. The Ministry of Internal Affairs will lead the initiative, working closely with local authorities and community organizations.
As part of the initiative, community monitors will not only report maintenance problems but will also carry out minor repairs, including the cleaning of drainage and brushing of road sides, to help preserve road quality and improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.
Speaking at the handover ceremony on Monday, August 18, 2025, NRF Manager Josetta Wentoe emphasized that the program is not only about improving road infrastructure but also about creating jobs and empowering young people. According to her, the project will recruit and deploy approximately 1,500 youths across the county who will serve as road monitors.
“This initiative is a twofold approach—first, to improve the condition of our roads, especially in remote communities, and second, to provide employment opportunities for our young people,” Wentoe said. For his part, Internal Minister Francis Nyumalin lauded the support, noting that the availability of logistics will enhance their capacity to work with community-based organizations in ensuring proper oversight.
The Community Road Monitoring Program is expected to significantly improve road durability and accessibility, especially in rural areas where feeder roads are essential for the movement of goods, services, and people. By engaging communities directly and empowering young people, the initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of decentralization and inclusive development.
