The Liberian government through the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has condemned the act Sande bush practice in Lofa County. The condemnation follows the graduation of 502 girls from the Sande bush in Konia, Lofa County.
The Gender Ministry said existence of Sande society is a violation of the ban placed on the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which has been in effect since April 30, 2025. According to a release, the ban on the practice of FGM was approved by the National Traditional Council of Elders.
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection says it remains steadfast in its implementation of the national Roadmap to fight and bring to an end the practice of Female Genital Mutilation. The Ministry said it is committed in protecting and securing the lives of young children, who have been abused and denied their rights.
