MRU Convenes To Establish Joint Technical Commissions For Boundary Delimitation

The Mano River Union (MRU) Secretariat has convened a high-level ministerial meeting, bringing together representatives from Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, and the host, Liberia.

The high-level meeting is to reaffirm commitments to peaceful coexistence and regional stability through the establishment of Joint Technical Commissions. Held in Monrovia from June 16-19, the meeting focuses on the reaffirmation of land boundaries and delimitation of maritime boundaries among the four member states.

The discussions among senior officials, including Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Internal Affairs, aimed at resolving longstanding border-related concerns through dialogue, technical cooperation, and legal clarity.

The Joint Technical Commissions will conduct geospatial assessments, review existing boundary agreements, and develop mutually recognized demarcation protocols, following international law and African Union principles.

Making a Special Statement on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai at the EJS Ministerial Complex, Justice Minister/ Attorney General of Liberia, Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh praised the initiative as “a landmark step toward enhancing regional integration, cross-border security, and sustainable development in the Mano River basin.”

Member states reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful negotiation, regional solidarity, and adherence to international norms as they moved toward formalizing technical and diplomatic mechanisms for boundary resolution.
