President Joseph N. Boakai has announced that approximately 34,000 people in Liberia are currently living with HIV, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive care for those affected by the virus.

“34,000 individuals in this country are infected with HIV; we believe they require immediate attention, as this represents a significant health challenge. The people have been very cooperative,” Boakai stated.

During a cabinet meeting with government officials at the Executive Mansion on Monday, May 19, 2025, President Boakai expressed deep concern over the rising number of HIV cases nationwide. He highlighted the necessity of strengthening healthcare systems and support services for individuals living with the virus.

“Our brothers and sisters living with HIV deserve proper care, psychosocial support, and access to life-saving treatment. We must do more to ensure they are not stigmatized or neglected,” President Boakai asserted.

The Liberian leader reiterated the government’s commitment to collaborating with international partners, health institutions, and community-based organizations to provide access to antiretroviral drugs, expand awareness campaigns, and enhance early testing and diagnosis efforts across the country.

He also stressed the importance of educating the public to reduce stigma and discrimination, which continue to pose significant barriers to an effective HIV response in Liberia.

President Boakai’s remarks come at a crucial time as Liberia strives to rebuild and strengthen its healthcare infrastructure following years of challenges, including the Mpox virus.

The cabinet meeting also addressed broader public health and social welfare issues, focusing on improving access to basic healthcare services and protecting vulnerable populations.
