Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has revealed the repatriation of at last 1000 Liberian refugees from Ghana.
The decision by the Liberian government to repatriate its citizens follows the demolition of the Buduburam Camp in Ghana, which made several Liberians homeless.
Speaking Tuesday, April 9, 2024, Minister Sara Beysolow-Nyanti said she has been working to ensure that everyone affected by the demolition exercise is sheltered. They are currently housed in two schools and a women development center, she disclosed.
Beysolow-Nyanti indicated that she has engaged the Ghanaian Embassy to help in bringing back those Liberians home.
In another development, Beysolow-Nyanti commended her team at the ministry for protecting their data and holding on to the names of individuals as it relates to handling passports.
She said they are about to put into place systems that will guide the ministry including working with officials of the Ministry of Health, Transport, the National Identification Registry, among others.
“This team has achieved about 61% in terms of passport handling and managed the process to ensure that those who are handling receive their passports,” she said.
Madam Nyanti further noted that this process is not political and will ensure that Liberian passports are respected in and out of the country.
The Foreign Minister added that the exercise is not only for diplomatic but also ordinary. She said process is intended to prevent foreigners from having access to Liberian passports.
“This is about ensuring that only Liberians should carry the Liberian passports and will make Liberians proud that they have a system they can trust,” she stated.
Minister Nyanti called on all citizens to join hands and protect their identification tools and be proud that they are Liberians.
