CEMESP, MFWA Host National Forum On Women’s Digital Rights in Liberia

The Center for Media Studies and Peacebuilding (CEMESP), in partnership with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and supported by the Netherlands Embassy in Ghana, held a National Stakeholders Forum on Women’s Digital Rights in Liberia on March 11, 2025, at D’Calabash in Monrovia.

Key policymakers, civil society organizations, and digital rights advocates gathered to discuss the challenges women face online, including cyberbullying and threats, particularly against those active in public life. Malcolm Joseph, Executive Director of CEMESP, emphasized the forum’s goal of reducing online harassment and promoting digital tool usage among women.

Chief Information Officer Sheik Sheriff, representing the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, highlighted the government’s commitment to developing digital policies that empower women. Deputy Information Minister Daniel Sando discussed the need to bridge the digital divide for women in the economy.

Ombudsman Cllr. Lamii Kpargoi presented an overview of digital rights in Liberia, while Peter King Quake from the West Africa ICT Action Network proposed key policy reforms to enhance women’s access and safety online.

A panel discussion featured insights from Antoinette Sendolo and Laura Korvah on the experiences of women in Liberia’s digital landscape, tackling issues like gender-based violence and advocacy efforts.

Vivian Affoah of MFWA highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing digital inequalities. The forum concluded with recommendations for stronger anti-harassment policies, enhanced digital literacy programs, and increased investment in digital infrastructure to improve access for women and marginalized groups in Liberia.
