The Grand Bassa Labor Commissioner, Jackson Quoigbian, has imposed a $24,000 fine on steel giant Arcelor Mittal Liberia (AML) for illegally hiring foreign nationals without work permits.
The fine was levied after eight Ghanaians were found working at the company’s concession area without the necessary authorization. Accordingly, AML is to pay US$3,000 each for those eight persons.
The company was given a 48-hour ultimatum to pay the fine. Commissioner Quoigbian said some of the Ghanaians were observed operating earthmoving equipment before the penalty was issued.
This action comes on the heels of a recent suspension by the Ministry of Labor on work permits for unskilled foreign workers across the country, and represents a significant step towards addressing labor compliance issues in Grand Bassa County and ensuring that local employment regulations are upheld.
