President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has called on government officials who still have positions in political parties to respect the Code of Conduct and resign either of the positions.
Speaking Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at the opening of the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs Special Cabinet Meeting at the EJS Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, Boakai said, “If you are working in the government and having position in the party at the same time, you must resign one of your positions to respect the law.”
According to him, the Code of Conduct forbids officials of government holding positions in parties as it is difficult to be active in the two positions at once. “Please read the Code of Conduct. If you are supposed to be secretary general and you are running an LPRC and the code of conduct says you are supposed to resign, I think we should look into it and respect what it says, or else, we will be in violation. I don’t want people to say I am witch-hunting them because we can’t have a country with people above the law,” the president said.
The President said if the laws of the country are respected, Liberia will be a better country, but some of his officials are yet to declare their assets for the public to know what they had before taking public office. The Liberian leader said his government will engage with the Legislature and Judiciary to understand that Liberia is a country that should be governed by the Code of Conduct.
According to Part V of the Code of Conduct, “All officials appointed by the President of the Republic of Liberia shall not: engage in political activities, canvass or contest for elected offices; use government facilities, equipment or resource in support of partisan activities; and serve on a campaign team of any political party, or the campaign of any independent candidate.”
