The Commissioner General of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), Steve J. H Zargo, has disclosed that about 148 ‘ghost officers’ have been discovered on the service payroll.
Addressing the Ministry of Information press briefing on Thursday, May 9, 2024, Zargo said the ghost officers were discovered after a personnel audit conducted by the new Administration.
Commissioner Zargo said upon taking over at LIS, he was informed that there were 2,348 personnel but the audit revealed contrary.
He said there should be an investigation into where the salaries of the 148 officers have been going.
Zargo also indicated that there is a need for an increment of salaries for officers of LIS, disclosing that an officer is making US$160.
The LIS Boss said officers are multi-tasking to raise revenue and protect all borders across the country and as such, they deceive better salary increment.
“Officers of LIS salary should be increase from US$160 to at least US$ 400 that will make officers put in more time and be in readiness to raise revenue and protect the borders,” he said.
According to him, there has been lots of development at LIS under his leadership which has resulted to senior staffs paying their regular visits to the counties and borders.
Commissioner Zargo indicated that the Internal Audit Division has completed its audit on the activities and operations of the Human Resource for the period January 3, 2024 – April 30, 2024.
