A shocking case of alleged matricide has sent waves of grief through Lower Lofa after a man identified as Vannie Dunor was accused of brutally killing his mother with an axe in Porluwu Town, Wanhassa District, on Saturday, June 27.
According to eyewitness Bendu Kamara, Dunor had just arrived from Popalahun Town when he encountered his mother at their home. Moments later, he reportedly collapsed and lost consciousness, prompting his mother to cry out for help as nearby residents rushed to revive him.
After regaining consciousness, Dunor allegedly told those around him that nothing was wrong but insisted he did not want to see his mother. As he attempted to leave, his mother followed him out of concern, repeatedly asking what had happened. Witnesses say he kept telling her to “forget about him.”
In a video circulating on social media, Bendu narrated that shortly afterwards, Dunor allegedly grabbed an axe and struck his mother multiple times in the head and face, inflicting critical injuries.
She explained that following the incident, residents rushed the victim to the Bolahun Clinic but were reportedly told the facility was closed, and medical personnel were unavailable. She was then transferred to Kolahun Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, the Liberian National Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities say the suspect is expected to be forwarded to court for prosecution.
The tragedy marks the second reported axe-related parent killing in Lofa County within two months. On May 11, 2026, a 21-year-old man, John K. Ndorbor, was accused of killing his father with an axe in Yangbalahun, Kolahun District. (Source: OKFM 99.5 & OKTV, Lofa County)
