The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has intensified efforts to promote sexual and reproductive health awareness among young Liberians, mobilizing nearly 1,000 youth at a Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Youth Jamboree aimed at empowering them with knowledge to make informed decisions about their future.

Speaking at the event held on Friday, June 19, 2026, at the Old Era Supermarket Compound in Sinkor, Monrovia, Dr. Mady Biaye underscored the importance of bodily autonomy, describing it as a cornerstone for education, equality, and economic empowerment.

“It is impossible to talk about equality, education, or economic empowerment without addressing bodily autonomy. When young people don’t have control over their own health and reproductive choices, the trajectory of their entire life is compromised,” he added.

The Jamboree, organized by civil society organizations with support from UNFPA and its partners, brought together youths from various communities to discuss challenges affecting their health, well-being, and personal development.

Dr. Biaye emphasized that Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights go beyond healthcare and should be recognized as a fundamental human right that influences a young person’s ability to thrive and transition successfully into adulthood. “True empowerment begins with having control over your own body, your own health, and your own choices. That is what SRHR is all about,” he said.

However, the UNFPA representative stressed the need for young people to have access to accurate and reliable information on preventing unintended pregnancies, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, understanding consent, and addressing sexual and gender-based violence.

According to him, access to youth-friendly reproductive health services can significantly improve opportunities for young women by helping them remain in school, pursue careers, and make informed decisions about family planning.

Dr. Biaye also praised the civil society organizations spearheading the initiative, describing them as vital partners in bridging the gap between national policies and local communities. “By gathering 1,000 youth today, you are creating a ripple effect. These young people will leave this Jamboree as peer educators, advocates, and shields for their communities,” he stated.

Reaffirming UNFPA’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s young population, Dr. Biaye pledged continued collaboration with government institutions, community groups, and development partners to expand access to quality health services, education, and protection programs nationwide.

He urged participants to maximize the opportunity by engaging in discussions, building networks, and using their voices to advocate for their rights and well-being. “Go forth, learn, network, dance, and make your voices heard. Your bodies, your rights, your future,” he said.

The SRHR Youth Jamboree forms part of broader efforts by UNFPA and its partners to equip Liberian youth with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to make informed choices about their health while contributing meaningfully to national development.
