Residents of Paynesberry are now using canoes to cross the river after a temporary bridge leading to Grand Bassa University collapsed on Sunday following heavy rainfall. The bridge had been serving as a short-term crossing while the main bridge project is still under construction. However, the heavy rains caused rising water levels that weakened the structure until it finally gave way. The collapse has blocked an important route used daily by students, teachers, and nearby residents. Many people now face longer and more difficult travel times.

With no safe land route available, canoe transport has become the main option for crossing the river. This has raised safety concerns, especially during the ongoing rainy season. Residents are calling on authorities to urgently repair access to the area and complete the permanent bridge project so that normal movement can return. (courtesy: Ablee-Jay TV).
