Ex-VP Taylor Proposes Raise In Candidate Registration…Ahead Of 2029 Elections

Liberia’s former Vice President and Political Leader of the National Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor, says the National Patriotic Party recommends that registration fees for outlined positions in Liberia’s electoral process be set in several financial structures.

The former Vice President proposed that the fee for a presidential candidate should be US$15,000, Vice President-US$10,000, Senator-US$5,000, and Representative seat is US$3,000.

This was part of several recommendations made by the NPP Political Leader at the Senate Judicial Committee’s Public Hearing on Electoral Reform on Monday, June 22, in the Senate Chambers.

Madam Taylor further stated that reform in the law, especially registration of political parties, will erase the “briefcase political parties” in the country. At the top of her 10-minute presentation, the former Vice President said the NPP supports the legal discipline of any lawmaker who immediately vacates any political party upon taking seat, adding that the individual should be made to lose the seat.

The hearing is being attended by leaders of political parties and other stakeholders, including the Congress for Democratic Change, Unity Party, Alternative National Congress, the Press Union of Liberia and the Dean of the Louise Arthur Grimes School of Law.
