Chief Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay, Sr. has announced a new annual performance evaluation and awards program for judges and magistrates nationwide, aimed at improving efficiency, professionalism, and accountability within Liberia’s judicial system.

Making the disclosure on Monday during the opening of the June Term A.D. 2026 of the Sixth Judicial Circuit Civil Law Court for Montserrado County, Chief Justice Gbeisay said judicial officers will now be assessed based on clearly defined performance standards, with top performers receiving annual recognition.

According to the Chief Justice, the assessment process will focus on factors such as timely case disposition, quality and accuracy of judgments, integrity, punctuality, courtroom administration, and the rate at which decisions are affirmed or overturned by the Supreme Court. Other evaluation benchmarks will include discipline, accountability, adherence to judicial dress standards, and the number of complaints filed against judges and magistrates.

The announcement was made during the commencement of the court’s quarterly session, which is held every third Monday of March, June, September, and December. Addressing members of the judiciary and justice sector stakeholders, Chief Justice Gbeisay stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and maintaining public confidence in the courts. “We are entrusted with an important responsibility, and we must carry it out with dedication, competence, and integrity,” he stated.

Reflecting on nearly three decades of service in the Judiciary, he encouraged judicial officers to remain vigilant, disciplined, and committed to fairness in the administration of justice. The Chief Justice emphasized that strengthening discipline within the Judiciary remains a major priority of his leadership and warned against any attempt by judicial officers to misuse their positions for personal benefit.

He made it clear that judges and magistrates found exploiting their offices for personal enrichment rather than serving justice would face disciplinary measures. Meanwhile, Chief Justice Gbeisay officially welcomed Judge J. Kennedy Peabody, Resident Circuit Judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit Civil Law Court for Montserrado County, back to active service following the completion of a disciplinary sanction imposed by the Supreme Court.

The Chief Justice expressed hope that Judge Peabody and all judicial officers would continue to serve with honor and professionalism. The newly introduced performance-based awards program is expected to encourage excellence and reinforce higher standards of service delivery throughout Liberia’s Judiciary.
