Amid a recent price hike in petroleum products, the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Transport, has issued new transportation fares for Monrovia and its surroundings. Speaking Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing, Deputy Minister for Rails, Road and Land Transport, Rudolph Natt, said this decision addresses the impact of global activities and commercial drivers exploiting citizens on fares.

According to him, the Ministry will work along with the Liberia National Police to ensure that the new fares are enforced, which will in turn guarantee that no student stays home due to high fares. He said the new transport fares will be displayed on the 16 electronic billboards in Monrovia.

According to him, due to global market trends, resulting in a surge in the price of petroleum products, many citizens have faced challenges with unpredictable fares and limited access to reliable transport. Moreover, this has affected students trying to reach schools, workers commuting to their jobs, and traders moving goods to markets, as well as commercial drivers  “We listened to these concerns, and today we are proud to announce the launch of a new transport fare that integrates all of the above for public transportation in Liberia,” he said.

Deputy Minister Natt said the new fare structure is designed with three key goals in mind Affordability – ensuring that every Liberian, regardless of income, can access safe and reliable transport, and fairness, creating a standardized system that eliminates confusion and protects commuters from exploitation and the provision of adequate commercial and public transport services in Liberia. “We at the Ministry of Transport will deploy our inspectors for massive awareness as well as enforcement along with Law Enforcement Agencies,” he added.  The fares include, from Broad Street to Monrovia City Hall, a previous price of L$30 and a proposed price of L$50; From Broad Street to Red Light, previously L$200, now L$250.

According to him, the cost from Monrovia to Tubmanburg City was L$600 LD. Now the proposed fare is 750 LD.  From Monrovia to Gbarnga was 900 LD, but now readjusted to L$1,100. Similarly, from Monrovia to Buchanan City, which was L$900, is now L$1,100, while from Monrovia to Voinjama City was 4,000 LD but now L$4,845. “From Monrovia to Harper City was 11,000 LD, now 13,000, while from Monrovia to Sanniquelle City was 2,000 LD, now 2,245 LD,” he added.
