Employees and members of the Armed Forces of Liberia have commemorated the fourth anniversary of the 14 Military Hospital, Liberia’s first post-war specialized military health facility. The event, held Friday, September 5, 2025 at the hospital’s compound in Schefflin, Margibi County, brought together employees, including doctors of the AFL and guests who reflected on the institution’s achievements and challenges since its establishment in 2021.

Speaking during the celebration, the head Doctor of the hospital, Maj. Dr. Albertha Clark-Kollie, said that the facility has been instrumental in handling critical health cases and boosting Liberia’s emergency response capacity. According to her, the 14 Military Hospital was commissioned to enhance national healthcare delivery and serve as a referral center during health emergencies, including pandemics and outbreaks.

Dr. Clark-Kollie narrated that over the past four years, the hospital has played a crucial role in providing specialized care, training health professionals, and complementing the services of existing public hospitals. Giving the overview of the hospital, CSM. Joyce Acquoi explained that the 14 Military Hospital was also established to provide quality, accessible rehabilitation healthcare services to members of the AFL, their dependents and the Liberian population.

However, she added that the vision statement aims to make the hospital as a center of excellence in the military and civilian healthcare, medical training and emergency response in Liberia and the West African sub-region.

“The hospital’s faculties have a 200-bed capacity wit inpatient and outpatient units, a maternity ward and extensive healthcare unity,” Madam Acquoi said. According to her, the facility also offers various services, such as surgical theaters, diagnostic services including laboratory and radiology, a pharmacy, a blood bank and an emergency unity.

She disclosed that the 14 Military Hospital has an isolation and treatment wards for infectious diseases and provides core services in general medicine, specialty care, surgical service, maternal and child health care, mental health care, emergency and trauma care, preventive medicine and health promotion.  Moreover, Madam Acquoi told the guests that the hospital responds to epidemic and pandemic outbreaks, such as Ebola and COVID-19 and plays a dual role as both a military medical facility and a national referral center.

Madam Acquoi revealed that the hospital operates under the Ministry of National Defense in partnership with the Ministry of Health, working closely with local and international partners, including the United States government, ECOWAS and other stakeholders. Speaking about long-term plans, she named the establishment of a military medical training facility, expansion of specialized services and the introduction of advanced technology in medical care.

CMS Acquoi said that the development of these facilities is expected to reduce the burden on other referral hospitals in Liberia and position the hospital as a National Center of Excellence.  She thanked the Chinese government for its support in establishing a fully equipped military lab that will be dedicated by the next anniversary. Representing the Minister of National Defense, Assistant Minister for Public Affairs Oscar Mublah recommitted to sustaining the hospital as a symbol of national pride and resilience.
