Members of the National Council of Chiefs over the weekend elected a new corps of officials replacing Chief Zanzar Kawor with Chief Arthur Dowah. The leadership of Chief Arthur Dowah is expected to play pivotal roles in advancing cultural heritage and fostering peace within Liberia.
Paramount Chief Arthur W. Dowah of Boinsen Chiefdom, KOKoya District, Bong County, was elected by the 15-member Council as National Chairperson in Gompa, Nimba County in the presence of a record crowd of other chiefs of the 15 counties along with County Superintendents, other local government officials, the media and civic society organizations, amongst others.
The election is in fulfillment of Chapter 3 of the Local Government Act of 2018 signed by former President George Manneh Weah in September 2018. The law, among other things, repealed the Act that created the National Traditional Council headed by Chief Zarzar Karwor, and it instead established a National Council of Chiefs.
Chief Dowah has a two-year tenure as mandated by the Local Government Act of 2018. The new Chief Zoe comes to the post with a wealth of experience and dedication to serving his community.
Others elected are Paramount Chief Ballah Gbotorlu from Lofa County, National Vice Chair for Culture and Traditional Affairs, and female Paramount Chief Rhoda Garmu of Grand Gedeh County, National Vice Chairperson for Peacebuilding and Reconciliation.
These newly elected chiefs are poised to bring their unique perspectives and expertise to their respective positions, working towards the preservation of traditional values and promoting unity across the nation.
