‘Wrong Yesterday, Right Today’…New LTA Boss In Money Spraying Spree

On Saturday, August 2, 2025, Patrick Honnah, the head of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, was caught on camera engaging in a behavior reminiscent of the “Billionaires’ Club,” a well-known Nigerian film in which wealthy men flaunt their ill-gotten gains by throwing money around.

Honnah, who had previously been a staunch critic of the former ruling Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) government led by football legend George Weah, found himself in the middle of a controversy during the birthday celebration of current Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah. He was seen throwing money in the air while a group of traditional singers performed.

In the past, Honnah had criticized CDC officials— including former Maritime Commissioner Eugene Nagbe, who was filmed displaying an extravagant banquet featuring lobsters and other gourmet items, and former Deputy Minister of State Emmanuel Potter, who was also recorded pouring expensive champagne over a new vehicle he had purchased for his wife. These actions sparked public outrage and ignited discussions about the corruption among public officials and their conduct while in office.

Honnah is now facing similar public backlash for actions he once condemned, especially at a time when President Joseph Boakai has acknowledged the hardships faced by ordinary citizens in the country.  Many view Honnah’s display as a case of “wrong yesterday, right today.” Meanwhile, supporters of the government have attempted to justify the situation by arguing that throwing money during traditional performances is part of the country’s cultural heritage and that Honnah was not in the wrong for participating in such acts.
