The Voinjama Public High School, one of the largest government-run schools in the city, is facing classroom shortage after a heavy storm damaged the auditorium, a space that once hosted several classrooms. The facility has been damaged since March this year. According to the Principal, Francis Kulee, the storm left portions of the building, especially the auditorium in ruins. Despite assessments by the Disaster Management Agency and the Ministry of Education, no repair work has been done.
“This building has been damaged since March of this year. A team came, assessed the situation, and we provided cost estimates but since then, nothing has happened,” Kulee explained. With more than 1,300 students enrolled, the school is struggling for enough space to host classes. Many students are now forced to sit in overcrowded classrooms or take lessons in makeshift spaces.
“Portions of our school are deserted, and we lack classrooms. Our students are really suffering,” the principal said. Voinjama Public High School, the second most populated government school in the city after Voinjama Multilateral High, serves grades there through twelve. The administration is calling on the Ministry of Education, Disaster Management Agency and humanitarian organizations to intervene and help restore the damaged facilities before the situation worsens.
