The University of Liberia Adjunct Faculties Association is calling for the dismissal of the University’s Financial and Human Resource Teams due to their deliberate violation of labor laws and their failure to perform their duties effectively.
In a release issued in Monrovia on Monday, March 17, 2025, the interim leadership of the adjunct faculty expressed dissatisfaction over the delayed payment of adjunct faculty members’ arrears for the years 2024 and 2025.
Despite intervention by the President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, in January 2025—directing that all adjunct faculty arrears be settled before the new academic year—no progress has been made.
Furthermore, the new President of the University, Dr. Layli Maparyan, prior to her recent trip to the USA, requested that the financial and human resource departments collaborate with the Ministry of Finance to ensure the payment of these arrears. However, as of now, both departments have shown an unwillingness to address the issue.
The adjunct faculty members view the ongoing refusal by the Financial and Human Resource Departments as a complete disregard for the authority of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and Dr. Maparyan. They also characterize this action as an intentional violation of Chapter 16 of the labor rights for contractors in Liberia. The leadership emphasizes the urgent need to overhaul both departments if the University of Liberia is to progress.
In the meantime, the Adjunct Faculties Association has urged all its members to cease all academic activities, including mid-term and final exams, until their arrears are resolved.
The Association remains committed to supporting the vision of Dr. Layli Maparyan as she aims to advance the university and combat labor abuses at the University of Liberia.
This release was issued under the signatures of the heads of the Adjunct Faculties Association’s interim leadership: Wilhelmina G. Stevens, Chair; James Massaboi, Vice-chair; and Antheloos M. Gruzean, Secretary.
