President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has received, and welcomed to Liberia, twenty-six top medical professionals from around the world under the canopy of “Medical Mission 2025”.
Giving the overview of the initiative on Friday, February 21, 2025 at a dinner with President Joseph N. Boakai at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia, the head of the medical mission, Dr. Joseph Sackor said that the Mission 2025 is a special presidential initiative to enhance healthcare in Liberia.
According to him, the medical professionals are from the United States of America, Canada, United Kingdom, and Europe. Dr. Sackor revealed that the initiative was solidified during President Boakai’s recent visit to the United States for the United Nations General Assembly, where he engaged with the leadership of the Liberia Medical Mission and persuaded them to choose Liberia as their next destination for their annual medical outreach.
“As a result of this high-level engagement, the Liberia Medical Mission has committed to deploying a team of 26 highly skilled medical doctors and healthcare professionals from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and Africa, to Liberia from February 21 to March 6, 2025,” he said.
The head of the mission revealed that the MM2024, now under the direct coordination of the President’s Delivery Unit (PDU), will provide extensive healthcare services and training programs at no cost to the government and private institutions in Liberia.
Dr. Sackor narrated that the mission will focus on three critical healthcare services to improve medical outcomes and strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure: He talked about a specialized medical professional that will perform cataract surgeries at the Emirates Hospital in Gbarpolu, restoring vision to hundreds of visually impaired patients from Bomi, Cape Mount, Gbarpolu, and Montserrado Counties.
Dr. Sackor said that the mental health professionals will conduct awareness campaigns and training sessions for healthcare providers, schools, and security agencies to address psychological wellness and trauma-informed care, adding that patients will receive free medical checkups, consultations, and essential medications.
“In addition to the core focus areas, the 2025 Liberia Medical Mission will also provide the following services: Biomedical Equipment Repair: A biomedical engineer will inspect, repair, and calibrate diagnostic equipment at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital and other major hospitals and clinics, ensuring that critical medical devices function optimally, Medical Supplies Distribution: More than 20 clinics and hospitals in Gbarpolu, Cape Mount, Bomi, Grand Bassa, and Montserrado will receive essential medical supplies, including personal protective equipment (PPEs), gloves, needles, and linens and CPR Training for Security Agencies: Seventy-five (75) personnel from the Liberia Immigration Service, Liberia National Police, Prison Officers, Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Liberia National Fire Service will be trained in life-saving CPR techniques amongst others.”
- Dr. Sackor said during their stay in Liberia, over US$500,000 worth of medications will be distributed to patients and hospitals in the designated counties.
For his part, President Boakai reaffirmed his government’s commitment to enhancing Liberia’s healthcare infrastructure and access to quality medical care.
The Liberian leader said that the initiative aligns with his administration’s vision to improve public health services and ensure that all Liberians, particularly those in underserved regions, benefit from specialized medical care.
Meanwhile, Boakai has mandated the President’s Delivery Unit (PDU) to provide full logistical support and coordination to guarantee the success of the 2025 Liberia Medical Mission.
President Boakai has also encouraged local stakeholders, healthcare professionals, and the general public to support and collaborate with the Liberia Medical Mission team to maximize the impact of this initiative.
