Through a partnership with the Indian Government, the Ministry of Mines and Energy has benefited from an international training opportunity for 30 of its mining engineers and geologists. The beneficiaries took off on Saturday, January 31, 2026, and their studies will focus on areas of mine safety, occupational health and safety, among other important areas associated with mining. The opportunity was negotiated with the Indian Embassy near Monrovia by the Senior Management Team of the Mines and Energy Ministry as part of efforts to enhance the capacity of employees of the Ministry for optimal efficiency and productivity.

Speaking during a brief appreciation and farewell ceremony at the Indian Embassy in Mamba Point, Ambassador Manoj Bihari Verma said India’s bilateral relations with Liberia remain strong and noted that the people of India will continue to collaborate with Liberians in fostering diplomatic cooperation and mutual coexistence. The Ambassador said, aside from the opportunity granted to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, India has undertaken several human capital development initiatives for Liberians and will continue to do more where needs exist.

The Indian Government was appreciated by the Assistant Minister for Planning, Research and Development, Emmanuel Vaye, who spoke on behalf of Mines and Energy Minister, R. Matenokay Tingban. He historicized the longstanding bilateral relations Liberia has had with the people of India, and commended them for the latest opportunity. Minister Vaye stated that the training opportunity aligns with the national development agenda of the Liberian Government – ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID).

The Assistant Planning Minister admonished the beneficiaries to utilize the opportunity by acquiring new skills in mining operations. The Mines and Energy Ministry’s commendation to the Indian Government was augmented by the Director of Mines, Alwell Aloysius Carr, a Mining Engineer. Carr thanked the Indian Embassy for extending its human capacity building opportunities to the  the Ministry of Mines and Energy. Director Carr assured the people of India that the Ministry (MME), will make good use of the training opportunity, calling on the engineers and geologists to focus on every aspect of the training by acquiring the intended knowledge.

Beneficiaries of the Indian scholarship are assigned across the 15 Counties of Liberia to head the Ministry’s County Offices. Speaking on their behalf, Butu Levi, a Mining Engineer and Chief Mines Officer for Montserrado County, commended the Indian Government. According to Engineer Levi, this training initiative will further enhance their capacities to properly manage the County Offices of the Ministry. The training is scheduled for two weeks in India, and it is expected that the beneficiaries will have great experiences interacting with some of the best modern mining technologies powering mining operations in India.
