The Plenary of the House of Representatives has instructed its Committee on Public Accounts and Expenditure to collaborate with the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to resume a system audit of the legislative body.
This decision was made on Thursday, February 27, 2025, following a communication from Representative Nyan G. Flomo of Nimba County District #2. Representative Flomo referenced Chapter 2, Article 5, Subsection (c) of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, which states: “The Republic shall take steps, by legislation and executive orders, to eliminate sectionalism and tribalism, as well as abuses of power such as the misuse of government resources, nepotism, and all other corrupt practices,” thereby placing the responsibility for governance reform on the Legislature of Liberia.
He pointed out that Rule 44.1 of the House stipulates that “Members are expected to fight corruption effectively by being free from corrupt practices, opposing corruption, and setting an example in any anti-corruption efforts.” It is worth noting that a previous attempt to conduct an audit of the House of Representatives by the GAC was abruptly halted last year without explanation.
According to Flomo, any further delay in resuming the audit would suggest that the House is unwilling to lead the fight against corruption. “Against this background, this communication serves as a wake-up call for the people’s representatives to demonstrate their commitment to addressing the corruption that continues to undermine the growth and development of our beloved country,” Representative Flomo stated.
