STAND, Liberia’s civil society advocacy organization, has commended the honorable Liberian Senate for endorsing the House’s Resolution, which proposes the establishment of a specialized court to address war and economic crimes in Liberia.
Acknowledging the joint efforts of House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and Pro Tempore Nyomblee Karngar-Lawrence, STAND underscores that the absence of an ACT to create a special court renders a Resolution ineffective.
The ongoing denial of justice to over 250,000 war victims is deeply troubling, emphasizing the humanitarian, moral, and legal imperatives at stake.
Therefore, it said urgent action is urged by the National Legislature to capitalize on this consensus and swiftly enact legislation establishing a war and economic crimes court for Liberia.
“Accordingly, our country’s dedication to upholding international humanitarian laws necessitates the need for President Boakai to write a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General, requesting global assistance in establishing a special court to address war and economic crimes in Liberia.
Additionally, STAND passionately urges His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to swiftly issue an executive order, establishing an office for War Crimes, embodying our collective quest for justice and healing. This endeavor will strengthen the international community’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding justice and accountability for Liberians,” the group said. STAND said it remains alert to these efforts, pursuing accountability and human dignity.
