On Friday, September 27, 2024, a group under the banner Youth & Students for Better Liberia (YSBL) put smiles on the faces of serious-minded students at the Great Commission Academy in Chicken Soup Factory by donating school items.

The donation, according to the group, is part of efforts to promote President Joseph N. Boakai’s Back to School Initiative. Items donated including pens, pencils, copy-books and book-bags worth over US$3,000.

Speaking with reporters shortly after the donation, Alexzina Wilson, YSBL Acting Executive Director indicated that there are plans to extend the donation to three other counties including Montserrado, Lower Bong and Lower Margibi Counties.

Madam Wilson disclosed that the aim of the organization is to help the needy and less fortunate, and this goes beyond schools, extending to the blind and parents that cannot afford.

“We have been in existence since 2015, doing our own thing by ourselves, helping people, the less fortunate and helping those that don’t have,” she said.  According to her, the initiative at the Great Commission is just the first phase because the organization has been constrained financially.

At the same time, she has called on humanitarians and good Liberians to help support the initiative. Meanwhile, she urged the students to pay attention to their lessons and see the initiative as an encouragement to learn.

Madam Wilson, however, rained praises on the Managing Director of the Freeport of Liberia Sekou M. Dukuly for sponsoring the first phase of the initiative. For his part, Great Commission Academy Vice Principal for Administration Kaifa Kamara applauded YSBL for the kind gesture to the student, describing it as “timely.”
