Commerce Minister Amin Modad says the rice situation in the country is complicated. However, he assured that there is a possibility to address it.
Speaking Friday, May 24, 2024 at the Cabinet retreat, Minister Modad said measures and strategies have been put in place to address the problem.
According to him, the past government misinformed the citizens that rice price i was stabilized for the past six years, which is not the case.
Minister Modad sad there were several letters written to the past government by rice importers to increase the price of rice to US$20 but their request was rejected yet the price was increased from US$14 to US$17.
“As part of the new interventions by this government, we have given Import Permit Declaration to three new importers. All are Liberians, unlike before,” the Minister narrated.
He also stated that the rice market will be opened to those who will meet the measures put in place by the government.
Modad told the gathering the there is no shortage of rice on the market. He disclosed that in the coming weeks, another batch of rice will arrive in the country which will serve the population for six months.
The Commerce Minister informed the President and cabinet ministers that there is a need to look at the rice issue critically and holistically to find a long term solutions.
He wants the government to invest in local production and price strategy. He called for the establishment of buffer stuck for rice including the establishment of value alternative center to help address the rice issue.
He disclosed that importers have agreed to give US$200,000 to help in the establishment of Value center for the Country.
