Police-Modifies-Motorcyclists’-Restriction…..Releases-New-Measures

The Liberia National Police (LNP) through its Inspector General, Gregory O.W. Coleman, has modified the ‘No-Go-Zone’ restriction on motorcyclists and tricycle riders, following several appeals.

Addressing a news conference on Thursday, May 9, 2024, Coleman said reverting on the restriction is due to several appeals and public outcries from the student community and Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung.

The Police Chief said the restriction plan is intended to prioritize safety for every Liberian including motorcyclists because they are the most vulnerable people when it comes to the traffic.

As a result of the vulnerability of motorcyclists and those they carry, Coleman explained that it was necessary to put in some measures.

According to him, after several meetings, they have agreed that beginning May 15, 2024, the full enforcement of the law in terms of traffic regulations will begin.

He stressed that motorcyclists, who want to use the ELWA Road through Sinkor to Freeport, should be in full compliance with terms and conditions laid down by the LNP.

The Police Inspector General maintained that all motorcyclists should be properly attired with helmets for riders and passengers, reflector jackets and safety boots. He also added that their bikes must be insured and registered with the Ministry of Transport.

He noted that the measure will be actively enforced for three months for motorcyclists using the ELWA Road through Sinkor to Freeport.

“After the three months, the measure will be enforced to all motorcyclists in Liberia,” Coleman told newsmen.

For his part, John Kenyor, President of the Liberia Motorcyclists and Tricycles Union, welcomed the decision of the police.

Kenyor said they will work with the LNP in ensuring strict adherence to the new measures.
