The Director of Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA,) Abraham Kromah is claiming that at least 1.1 million Liberians have been affected by drugs and other harmful substances. He fell short of giving a genuine source or statistics as to how he determined the number of drug users.
Speaking Thursday, April 25, 2023 at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing, Kromah indicated that the issue of drugs is very alarming and must be treated with extreme seriousness.
He called on citizens to support the LDEA in whatever way possible so as to collectively wage war against the menace.
According to him, the price of drugs has drastically increased in various communities due to enforcement measures instituted by the agency thus creating scarcity of the illegal commodity. He wants legislative action to support LDEA in combating the drugs.
“There is a meeting planned for me to meet the Drugs Enforcement Agency of Sierra Leone to discuss on how we can get rid of drugs”, he said.
Kromah disclosed that the LDEA has conducted several inspections at Bo-Waterside and other border points around the country.
The LDEA Director added that they will be reaching out to schools and communities conducting drug awareness in the coming days as the agency is developing a framework document that will enable it to access drugs cases from anywhere.
He told journalists that his priority as head of the LDEA is to improve the entity and fight against drugs and not people.
