The Speaker of the House of Representatives, J. Fonati Koffa says there was no substandard wiring in house that could have possibly led to the building being gutted by fire late Sunday, April 14, 2024 in Paynesville.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Speaker Koffa said they do not know the cause of the fire and are looking up to the Liberia National Fire Service’s (LNFS) investigation.

Speaker Koffa revealed that he will be inviting external fire investigators to join forces with LNSF to investigate the devastating fire disaster that occurred at his home leaving him and his family displaced.
“President Joseph N. Boakai called me yesterday from Bomi and we talked for 20 minutes; he expressed his distress for the situation, the First Lady also called me for 5 minutes and expressed her sadness also,” Speaker Koffa said.

He said colleagues from the Legislature are also in solidarity with them. Koffa disclosed that his family temporarily homeless but added they are okay.

Speaker Koffa said his family only lost material things during the fire incident but no lives were lost in the process.

“My special appreciation to former President George M. Weah who left his home last night and blessed me with three suitcases full with clothes,” Speaker Koffa noted.

He said the fire outbreaks in the country are not for special kind or those working in government, calling for quick action in finding the remedy sooner than expected.

“If a free society cannot protect the many that are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich,” Speaker Koffa said.
