The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority, (NaFAA) with funding from the World Bank, has begun an eight-day aquaculture training in Margibi and Bong Counties. The training is under the Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project.
According to a NaFAA release, the training will be followed by a one-day “Aquaculture Development Day” on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.
NaFAA also disclosed that the training is designed to develop aquaculture and enhance the technical capacity of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) technicians and extension officers. The training is geared toward improving Liberian aquaculture.
“It is also intended to ensure the dissemination of knowledge of core aquaculture components that will have a knock-on effect of improving aquaculture yields by refining the common practices. Participants at the training will be drawn from several aquaculture cooperatives including, the Bong County Aquaculture Cooperative, Nimba County Aquaculture Cooperative, and Lofa County Aquaculture Cooperative among other,” the release stated.
Discussions at the training will centered on improvements in feed conservation ratio FCR, increased biosecurity, and hatchery management along with upgraded pond construction techniques, among others.
Moreover, the eight days training will be followed by a one-day intensive “Aquaculture development” workshop to engage stakeholders in aquaculture development through the sharing of best practices across Africa, information on the most recent developments in Liberia and elsewhere, connecting professionals with interests in the sector, and discussing cooperation opportunities.
The one-day event, which will be held under the theme, “Aquaculture Development Day in Liberia” is jointly organized by the Government of Liberia through the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority and AquaBioTech Group, a leading international aquaculture development firm from Malta.
