The Ministry of Health (MoH) will join local and international partners to celebrate World Sight Day today. The day will be observed under the theme “Love Your Eyes” and the slogan “Every sight Counts.” According to a press release, this year’s commemoration focuses on mobilizing parents, teachers and health professionals to prioritize early screening and routine eye examinations for children, in a bid to prevent avoidable sight loss.
The Ministry, alongside its partners, is stepping up efforts to promote preventive care and early detection, particularly among school-age children in under-resourced communities. The goal is to screen around 1,000 children across six public and private schools, distribute 12,000 pairs of reading glasses, and provide treatment where required.
Health workers and volunteers will also visit classrooms to promote healthy eye care habits, from limiting screen time to eating nutritious foods that support vision. The Ministry seeks to strengthen public understanding, encourage government engagement and deepen collaboration with both local and international partners. The Minister of Health, Dr. Louise M. Kpoto, urges parents to commit to regular eye tests for their children; schools to champion consistent screening programs (strengthen the school health program); and communities to remember that every story of restored sight truly counts.
