Margibi County Senator Nathaniel F. McGill has frowned on the decision of the Liberian Senate to work with the Majority Bloc lawmakers under the gable of controversial Speaker Richard N. Koon following an interpretation of the Supreme Court’s ruling through the Attorney-General of Liberia, Cllr. Oswald Tweh.

Speaking with legislatives reporters on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Senator McGill accused the President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration of failing to manage the crisis at the House despite other efforts made.

“The Executive’s decision is a coup and his opinion has no serious basis and the decision taken by majority members of the Senate does not favor the legal opinion of the body; as such, I have chosen to put myself on the record that I oppose the decision, “he said.

Senator McGill said the decision by the Executive is a recipe for chaos; adding that his colleagues are saying they should follow the decision despite several violations of the country’s law.

According to him, the Senate failed to seek further legal opinions and instead solely relied on the opinion of the Attorney-General.

Meanwhile, Senator McGill distanced the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) from what he termed the unconstitutional removal of Speaker Koffa.

He condemned allegations that the National Executive Committee of the CDC, including its standard bearer and former President George Manneh Weah, has been plotting to remove Cllr. Koffa, noting that the party remains unhappy with the removal of the Speaker.

He said the spotlight is under the international community as to whether the alleged unconstitutional acts by the Liberian government will be recognized without stating a position on a ‘crash’ on the rule of law.

“We’re watching whether the international community will support and do business with this unconstitutional body. Sanctions cannot stop me from talking and I want to be on the record that I disagree with this decision of the Senate,” he said.
