The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Health, has sponsored Dr. Augustine L. Kollie for a two-year Clinical Nephrology Fellowship at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Clinical Nephrology is a specialized medical discipline that studies normal kidney function, problems, treatment and replacement including dialysis and transplantation.

According to a release issued in Monrovia on August 15, 2025, Dr. Kollie, a 2024 graduate of the Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons (LCPS) specializing in Internal Medicine, departed Monrovia on Wednesday evening.  His training will focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of kidney diseases, an area of growing concern in the country.

The fellowship is fully funded by the Liberian Government as part of a capacity-building project to reduce the burden of renal-related illnesses and injuries across the nation.  The program forms part of ongoing efforts to equip Liberian healthcare workers with specialized skills to meet rising medical demands.

Dr. Catherine T. Cooper commended his commitment to the profession and urged him to remain focused on his studies. “This is a proud moment for our health sector,” Dr. Cooper said. “We expect you to return with the expertise needed to deliver high-quality renal care services to our people. We also encourage you to respect the laws of Kenya and uphold the dignity of Liberia while abroad.”

For his part, Dr. Kollie expressed deep appreciation to the Ministry of Health and the Liberian Government for what he described as a life-changing opportunity. However, the Ministry of Health believes that training specialists like Dr. Kollie will help bridge the gap in renal healthcare and improve patient outcomes. The Ministry of Health will continue to sponsor similar advanced medical training programs in various specialties to strengthen the country’s healthcare delivery system.
