Liberia is preparing to hold national fundraising events to support its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. During a regular press briefing at the Ministry of Information on Thursday, May 1, 2025, Madam MacDella Cooper, the Senior Political Advisor to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., announced that she has been challenged to raise US$1 million. This funding will facilitate the campaign team’s efforts to travel globally and solicit support for Liberia’s candidacy.
The campaign will culminate in New York on May 28, 2025, leading up to the election scheduled for June 2, 2025. Liberia needs to secure 125 votes to win the non-permanent seat. Madam Cooper expressed confidence that Liberia is close to obtaining the necessary votes, but emphasized that the fundraiser is crucial to ensure that all votes are secured on Election Day.
She indicated that they are reaching out for support from cabinet members and friends of Liberia, noting that the business community has also made commitments to the fundraising efforts.
A local fundraiser is planned for Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 5 PM in Monrovia, taking place at the Executive Pavilion, with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai as the host.
Madam Cooper stated, “We have reached out to former President George Manneh Weah, and we are not discriminating based on political affiliation; this is not a partisan initiative.” She urged everyone to participate and purchase tickets, which will be available for sale at the venue.
She mentioned that students from the University of Liberia have shown interest in attending, but many do not have the full amount for tickets. In response, the campaign team has agreed to offer discounts to students.
For example, the Minister of Information, Jerolinmek M. Piah, will purchase his personal ticket for US$500 and will also contribute US$5,000 for his entire ministry.
Madam Cooper called on all Liberians to support this initiative, stating that a victory for the country will ultimately be a victory for every citizen. She also announced that after the main program, a station will be set up at the Invisible Park for ordinary citizens, including mothers, market vendors, and bike riders, to contribute in smaller amounts.
