Grand Gedeh County Electoral District 2 Representative, Marie Johnson has called upon the Liberia Refugee, Repatriation, Resettlement and Reintegration Commission (LRRRC) to expedite the resettlement and reintegration process for the recently repatriated Liberians from Ghana.
Representative Johnson serves as Chairperson of the House Standing Committee on Refugees, Repatriation, Resettlement, and Rehabilitation.
She made the statement during a meeting with LRRRC and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
She said the timely resettlement and reintegration of returnees is crucial for the peace and security of Liberia.
She also expressed concern for children suffering from mental illnesses. She assured the LRRRC of the House Committee’s commitment to collaborate with the Executive Branch and key stakeholders to secure the necessary funding for the Commission to carry out its mandate effectively.
For his part, LRRRC Director, Patrick Worzie highlighted that a major challenge in the reintegration process is the lack of packages for the returnees.
He noted that the refugees will be processed in Maryland, Grand Gedeh, and Nimba Counties.
Mr. Worzie reported that a total of 4,232 individuals are expected to be repatriated from Ghana, with over one thousand already returned to Liberia. The remaining returnees are anticipated to arrive between July and August this year.
