The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Richard Nagbe Koon, has made a compelling case for Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026-2027 term.

Speaking at the official launch of the local campaign for Liberia’s bid for the UNSC seat on Monday, February 10, 2025 in Monrovia, Speaker Koon emphasized Liberia’s historical contributions to peace, governance, and regional stability, positioning the nation as a deserving candidate for the esteemed global role, highlighting its longstanding commitment to multilateralism, peacekeeping and human rights advocacy.

the lawmaker is quoted in a release as saying, “Our nation, Africa’s first independent republic, has long championed self-governance, peace, and human rights,” underscoring Liberia’s contributions to decolonization and its active role in regional diplomacy.

Koon said there is a need for strong regional and international backing to secure the seat, stressing that Liberia’s campaign is not just about national interests but about amplifying Africa’s voice in global decision-making.

“Our campaign is about ensuring that issues affecting Africa receive the attention they deserve at the highest levels of international governance,” he said.

He reminded the audience of Liberia’s role in hosting peacekeeping missions, contributing personnel to UN peace operations, and being a founding member of ECOWAS—a regional body instrumental in promoting peace and economic cooperation.

“We continue to work with neighboring countries to combat illicit financial flows, human trafficking, and transnational organized crime, all of which threaten our region’s stability,” he said.

Additionally, he pointed to Liberia’s active participation in addressing global challenges such as climate change and human rights.

Acknowledging that securing a UNSC seat requires strategic diplomatic engagement, Speaker Koon urged African nations, transatlantic partners, and the international community to support Liberia’s bid.

He said with a seat at the Security Council, Liberia would advocate for policies that promote peace, development, and equitable representation for developing nations.

“Together, we can ensure that our continent and its people have a stronger voice in shaping the global agenda,” the rebel-styled House Speaker said, calling on all stakeholders to stand with Liberia in this historic endeavor.
