Barely a day after worship services of the United Methodist Church in Liberia was disrupted over the current disagreement over the issue of same sex marriage, the Liberia National Police (LNP) on Monday, October 14, 2024, invited the Bishop of the church Samuel Quaire for a meeting.

Bishop Quaire told the Inspector General of Police Col. Gregory O. W. Coleman that their mother body (General Conference) gave them an 18-month ultimatum to implement the regionalization process that will determine whether the Liberia Annual Conference will support same sex marriage.

He said there is no way the church will sign unto same sex marriage because it’s against the laws and cultures of Liberia, and at no time, the United Methodist Church intends to conduct same sex marriage as was speculated on social media on Sunday afternoon of October 13, 2024.

Bishop Quaire was escorted at the police headquarters by some high ranking members of the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) headed by its former President Bishop Kortu Brown.

For his part, Inspector General Coleman said the police extended an invitation to Bishops of the United Methodist Church and some high ranking officials of the Liberia Council Churches to ascertain the cause of the tension at the 72nd and New Georgia Estate branches of the Methodist Church.

However, the Police IG dismissed rumors that same sex marriage was being carried out at the New Georgia Estate United Methodist Church branch and classified said information as false and misleading.

IG Coleman said he called the clergymen to a meeting due a misinformation campaign on social media relating to man and man getting married at the church, but said the church didn’t officiate any gay wedding as being paraded on social media and by members of the public.
