The Grand Gedeh County Health Team, along with the administration of Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital, has established a strategic partnership with a five-member medical delegation from the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL).
The engagement aimed to initiate discussions on improving healthcare access for AFL personnel and their dependents residing in Zwedru and surrounding areas. A release dated May 3, 2025 revealed that central to the discussions was a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that would formalize AFL staff and family access to local medical services.
Under the proposed agreement, the AFL would develop a structured system for processing and settling medical bills through its internal management, ensuring timely and transparent payment for services rendered.
The AFL delegation was led by Major Dr. Albertha Clarke Kollie and included Major Dr. Sumowar Edwin N., 2nd Lt. Paul Sampson N., 2nd Lt. Kaazaku Krubo K., and MSG SayonAlexander L. During the meeting, the team outlined the challenges faced by soldiers in accessing adequate healthcare, citing ongoing issues with existing insurance providers.
They also acknowledged the critical support provided by Christ the King Clinic in Zwedru, which, despite its limited resources, has consistently served AFL personnel and their families. It was clarified that the proposed healthcare arrangement would cover specific services, including emergency and routine treatments.
However, cases involving criminal abortions, assaults occurring outside the workplace due to staff negligence, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) would be excluded. These exclusions aim to promote ethical use of healthcare resources and ensure services are reserved for medically justified needs.
While the MoU is still being finalized, AFL personnel have been advised to continue seeking medical care as necessary.
Medical bills should be submitted to AFL management for direct payment to the designated healthcare facility’s bank or mobile money account. No individual reimbursements will be made, reinforcing transparency and accountability.
