The Government of Liberia has launched the University Innovation Pod- Liberia (UNIPOD). Speaking Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at UL Fendal Campus, Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung said the launch of the UNIPOD marks a significant step forward in the collective efforts towards digital empowerment and innovation in Liberia.
According to him, if Liberians will boast of a generation prepared to safeguard the future of the nation, they must begin to train students and youth with the technological skills of the 21st century.
“As we gather to celebrate the inauguration of the University Innovation Pod, we must also reflect on the broader vision we have set forth for the digital transformation of our beloved nation,” Koung indicated. Vice President Koon stated that Liberia’s future hinges on Liberians’ ability to harness the power of technology and innovation to drive progress, create opportunities, and empower youth to lead the country into a brighter tomorrow.
He said President Joseph Nyuma Boakai made a promise to train 10,000 young people in digital skills through the digital transformation project, which this project also seeks achieve.
“Today, as we witness the unveiling of the University Innovation Pod, I see this space as a crucial piece in fulfilling that promise. This UNIPOD is not just a physical structure; it is a symbol of our commitment to equipping our youth with the tools they need to thrive in this digital age,” the Vice President added.
He explained that the UNIPOD is one of 13 to be established across Africa in line with the President’s vision. The Vice President disclosed that the UNIPOD contains a maker space, computers and accessories with workstations to address challenges in engineering, environment, agriculture, and business.
He noted that Liberian UNIPOD space is set to become a cornerstone of innovation in the region, offering state-of-the-art facilities and resources for start -up. The Vice President lamented that it is impossible for students and youth to compete for jobs in ICT and the growing need for Artificial Intelligence without the requisite skills needed.
He believes the use of technology in education will put students and youth on par with the rest of the world, making education relevant to their digital lives. “I am concerned about the technological disparity that exists between students and youth in developed countries and others in low-income countries such as Liberia. We must therefore act swiftly to bridge this gap and ensure our young people are able to compete on the global stage. This is why the UNIPOD Liberia official launch gives hope that we are serious and prepare to embrace the digital age,” he stated.
