President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is set to open two new senior high schools in Bong and Nimba Counties on Monday, July 21, 2025. According to a press advisory from the Ministry of Education, this initiative represents a significant advancement in the Liberian government’s efforts to provide improved education and learning environments throughout the country.
The schools, located in Gbarnga City, Bong County, and Ganta City, Nimba County, were constructed with the assistance of the World Bank’s Improving Results in Secondary Education (IRISE) Project. These modern facilities are part of a broader plan to enhance high school infrastructure, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
These new schools include classrooms equipped with furniture, science and computer labs, administrative offices, restrooms for both boys and girls, access to clean water, fencing, and recreational areas. Additionally, a third school in Kakata, Margibi County, is nearing completion and is expected to open later this year.
The establishment of these schools aims to alleviate pressure on existing institutions and foster a more equitable education system. A significant focus is placed on increasing female enrollment in high school. To ensure high educational standards, student enrollment and teacher hiring will be based on merit. Only the top-performing students from these counties will be admitted, and only the most qualified teachers, selected through a rigorous process, will be hired.
President Boakai’s opening of these schools underscores his government’s commitment to enhancing the skills and knowledge of the population. This initiative aligns with the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development and highlights the strong leadership of Education Minister Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, who is dedicated to transforming Liberia’s education system. The Ministry’s focus on improving school infrastructure, access, and quality is evident in its ongoing efforts.
The construction of these schools reflects the solid partnership between the government and the World Bank in their joint effort to establish a robust education system in Liberia. The Ministry of Education is dedicated to providing all Liberian students with high-quality education, regardless of their location or background.
The ultimate goal is to cultivate well-educated citizens who can guide Liberia toward a more equitable and sustainable future. By investing in these new educational facilities, the government aims to equip the next generation to meet the challenges and opportunities of a changing world.
This initiative not only benefits students who are directly enrolled but also serves the wider community by laying a foundation for growth and development. Improved educational outcomes can lead to increased economic activity and a better quality of life for all residents. The emphasis on merit-based enrollment and teacher recruitment ensures that these schools maintain the highest operational standards, fostering a culture of excellence that can inspire both students and educators. This strategy promises long-term benefits, resulting in a more skilled and capable population ready to lead Liberia into a prosperous future.
