The Liberia National Police, through its Spokesperson, Cecelia G. Clarke, informed journalists during a press briefing on June 18, 2025, that the abandoned baby discovered at the Brewerville Cemetery was turned over to the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.
Madam Clarke said the abandoned baby was discovered at 10:21 pm at the Brewerville Cemetery on June 16, 2025, where a video of the discovery has been trending on social media.
She said that upon the discovery of the baby by residents of the Brewerville Community, they immediately reported the incident as responsible citizens to the Zone Six Police Station, but were told to take the baby home with them due to the absence of women and children protection officers.
According to her, when a baby is found, it doesn’t mean that the finder owns the baby, something that those who discovered the baby are doing. She said there are procedures to follow in getting an abandoned, missing, or runaway child.
For her part, the Head of Women and Children Protection, Susie Telleh, said her role is to receive missing, abandoned, and runaway child/children, and turn them over to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection for onward safekeeping. She said the baby was turned over yesterday, June 18, 2025, to the Gender Ministry after seeking medical treatment at the SOS health facility in Congo town.
Madam Telleh disclosed that the baby was in a deplorable health condition, which the police prioritized before turning her over to the Gender Ministry. Meanwhile, investigation continues into the alleged abandoned baby saga to bring the truth to light, the police spokeswoman said.
