The family of a man reportedly killed by heavy moving equipment in the concession area of Bea Mountain Mining Company in Grand Cape Mount County are calling on the Government of Liberia to ensure justice for their late family member.
It can be recalled that the incident was reported by VERITY News on Friday, February 14, 2025, after the company had allegedly attempted to cover it up.
According to the report, the incident occurred because the victim, Garvelo Blawin, did not have any protective gear (No hard hat or helmet, no headlight, no high-visibility jacket, no hearing protection, no boot, no gloves, etc.), and the operational area doesn’t even have lights.
Blawin died instantly after a Komatsu HD785 Truck struck a parked Volvo Articulated Truck, which rolled over him. The Liberian miner once drove for Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC).
But speaking on the incident in a release dated February 15, 2025, the company said it was deeply saddened to report the tragic accident, extending thoughts and prayers to the family and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking event.
The release said that the management of Bea Mountain, in collaboration with the Liberia National Police, is actively conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
“We are committed to transparency throughout this process and will provide updates to the public as soon as the investigation is completed. Both the management of Bea Mountain and the Government of Liberia take this incident very seriously and are fully dedicated to ensuring a comprehensive inquiry. We ask the public to remain peaceful and law-abiding during this time, as we await the findings of the investigation,” the Bea Mountain release said.
But receiving their loved one’s dead body over the weekend, the family said it was disheartening for their son, brother, and father of 11 children, to have died in such an unfortunate situation. It is really sad. We lost our brother and it hurts,” a brother of the deceased said.
