Defendant Abass Sanor, aged 42, has been sentenced to 40 years imprisonment at the Grand Cape Mount County Prison Facility for multiple charges of drugs and substances.
He was charged with Unlicensed Possession of Controlled Drugs or Substance of Section 14.89 of the 2023 Drug and Substances Act, and Trafficking of Controlled Drugs or Substance of Section 14.83 of the 2023 Drug and Substances Act, which was amended under Chapter 14 of the Penal Law.
Upon conviction, Defendant Sarnor was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for each of the two charges, to be served consecutively, totaling 40 years of imprisonment.
Judge Osuman Feika ordered the confiscation and auctioning of the seized mini-bus which was used in the transportation of the controlled substance. Judge Feika ruled that the proceeds from the sale of the vehicle are to be directed per the provisions of the 2023 Drugs and Substances Act.
The judgment underscores the Liberian judiciary’s commitment to enforcing the country’s drug laws and curbing the trafficking and illegal possession of dangerous substances.
On August 2, 2024, Sanor was apprehended by law enforcement authorities in Grand Cape Mount County while in transit from Guinea to Liberia. The defendant was found in possession of 31 kilograms of a controlled substance known as “Kush,” valued at over L$100 million as it was concealed at the back of his mini-bus. Following his arrest, he was indicted by the County Attorney of Grand Cape Mount Cllr. Nyonkpao Daye during the August Term of Court in 2024.
The trial commenced during the November Term of Court; upon the conclusion of the proceedings, the defendant was found guilty on both counts, Unlicensed Possession and Trafficking of Controlled Drugs or Substance.
