Matters could be getting worse for the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) Commissioner Dorbor Jallah, with Margibi County Senator Nathaniel McGill calling for him to be investigated amid the resignation of his accomplice, Commerce Minister Amin Modad in a US$96,000 vehicle saga.

Senator McGill said despite the resignation of former Commerce Minister Amin Modad, investigation should continue because Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) violated the law by instructing Medtech to purchase the vehicle.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, Senator McGill said the former Commerce Minister’s resignation is a necessary first step, but it is far from sufficient. Senator McGill said the Liberian Senate, in its report on Medtech, pointed to this as a gross violation of the agreement and recommended that the General Auditing Commission (GAC) conducts a full audit to determine how much Medtech spent on behalf of the government.

“It further recommended that Medtech be held accountable for repayment. Despite being fully aware of this breach, the LRA still authorized Medtech to proceed with the unlawful transaction,” he said. He said it is true that Madad personally benefited but it was the LRA that broke the law, making both parties equally guilty and liable.

“This situation is not just about Amin’s resignation; it’s about upholding transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. If those principles are not enforced, such violations will continue to erode public trust,” McGill said.

It can be recalled that in Modad’s resignation letter to President Boakai on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, he said, “Over the last few days there has been public outcry over the purchase of a vehicle for over $45,000.00. Though I have provided all documentations and facts that equivocally demonstrate that there was no malfeasance, I am deeply concerned about the impact on my integrity and the administration; this continues to be a distraction from the real national issues and your agenda.”

Modad said he was tendering in his resignation as Minister of Commerce & Industry, a position that he ably served with integrity and passion for the past nine months, saying he and his family remain thankful to the president for the opportunity to serve the Liberian people.
